Properties and Benefits

Mango butter is popular for its emollient properties – Emollients are substances that are known to soften and soothe the skin. Mango butter therefore, is used to correct dryness and scaling of the skin.

Mango butter is a great source of essential fatty acids and contains natural antioxidants – these are substances that can work against the cell-damaging effects of free radicals. The use of mango butter helps protect the skin and retain moisture.

Mango butter is also popular for its moisturizing properties. Moisturizers make the skin (epidermis) softer and suppler by increasing its water content (hydration).

Mango butter has several benefits, particularly on the skin. It helps heal: dry skin, skin rashes, skin peeling, blemishes and wrinkles, itching skin, sun burn, small skin wounds, skin cracks, rough skin, frost bite, stretch marks (during pregnancy), insect bites, muscle fatigue, aches and tension, skin allergies (such as poison ivy or poison oak), eczema and dermatitis, fine lines.

Uses

Mango butter is a common base ingredient for body care products and soaps. Mango butter is also a fantastic ingredient used in lip balms, lotions, creams, belly butters, body butters, lotion bars and shaving creams.

History and Cultural Aspects

Mango (Mangifera Indica) is recorded to be planted for more than 6,000 years. The mango butter was traditionally used in the rainforest and tropic regions for its known skin softening and protective qualities.

Origin

Mango is native to eastern Asia, Myanmar (Burma), and Assam state of India. Mango butter is pressed from the seed kernels of the Mango tree.

Consistency

Mango butter is non-greasy and easily absorbed into the skin.

Mango Butter Recipes

Coco - Mango Body Butter

Prepare and measure ingredients. For this recipe, you will need: 30 grams unrefined shea butter, 30 grams virgin coconut oil, 20 grams mango butter, 19 grams sweet almond oil, 1 gram vitamin E, a teaspoon of essential oils (use any blend according to your preference).

In a heat proof bowl, place shea butter and heat in a double boiler until melted. Remove from heat. Add coconut oil and mango butter and stir with a wooden stick until the butter is melted (you may need to use a double boiler to completely melt the mango butter). Add the essential oils and vitamin E and blend well until all the essential oils are incorporated. Continue blending until mixture becomes thick. Pour into a clean jar.

Mango-Avocado Body Butter

Prepare and measure ingredients. For this recipe, you will need: 40 grams unrefined shea butter, 10 grams virgin coconut oil, 10 grams mango butter, 10 grams avocado butter, 10 grams hemp butter, 19 grams sweet almond oil, 1 grams vitamin e, a teaspoon of essential oils (use any blend according to your preference).

In a heat proof bowl, place mango butter and hemp butter. Heat in a double boiler until melted. Add shea butter, virgin coconut oil, avocado butter and oils to the melted oils and stir with a wooden stick until the butter is melted (you may need to use a double boiler to completely melt the butters). Add the essential oils and vitamin E and blend well until all the essential oils are incorporated. Continue blending until mixture becomes thick. Pour into a clean jar and cap.

Tropical Body Butter

In a wide-mouthed jar, combine ½ C shea butter, ¼ C coconut oil and 1 tablespoon mango butter. Melt in the sun then stir together. Cap jar and store in a cool place.

Mango Soothing Lotion

Prepare and measure ingredients. For the oil phase, you will need: 0.8 ounce emulsifying wax, 1.5 ounces grape seed oil, 1.5 ounces sunflower seed oil, 0.3 ounces mango butter, 0.9 ounces glycerine, 1/16 tsp phenonip, a teaspoon of essential oils (use any blend according to your preference). For the water phase, you will need: 4 ounces water mixed with 100x aloe powder, 1/16 tsp silk protein, 1 ounce Natrasorb 100.

In a heat proof bowl, place all oil phase ingredients. Heat in a double boiler until melted. Cool to 150 degrees F. Warm the water to 150 degrees F and add the oil mixture, then add silk protein and Natrasorb. Mix well until mixture is thick. Pour mixture into a clean jar.

Mango Bath Bombs

Prepare and measure ingredients. For the dry phase, you will need: 2 cups sodium bicarbonate, 1 cup citric acid. For the oil phase, you will need: 50 grams shea butter, 25 grams Mango Butter, 5 grams Apricot kernel oil, 3 grams Wheat Germ oil, 12 grams Polysorbate 20, 4 grams of essential oils (use any blend according to your preference).

Mix the dry ingredients together and spoon loosely into molds, and set aside. In a heat proof bowl, place all oil phase ingredients then heat in a double boiler until melted. Spoon into molds and mix in to eliminate air pockets and to thoroughly coat the dry ingredients. place the bars in the freezer for an hour or two before removing them and turning them out of their moulds.

Mango Butter Lip Balm

Prepare and measure ingredients. For this recipe, you will need: 1 ounce beeswax, 1 ounce mango butter, 1 ounce cocoa butter, 10 drops essential oil (citrus, peppermint, spearmint or a blend of those oils, according to your preference), 1 ounce sweet almond oil.

In a heat proof bowl, place beeswax, mango butter and cocoa butter, then heat in a double boiler until melted. Remove from heat then add essential oils and mix well. Pour mixture into lip balm tubes or tins.
