The Benefits of Poppy Seed Oil in Home Made Cosmetics
The properties of poppy seed oil are similar to those in hemp seed oil. It is a great oil to use as a base ingredient for home made massage oil recipes because of the ability that poppy seed oil possesses to treat many kinds of muscular pain, rheumatic pain, arthritis pain, and even more severe cases of pain including discopathy and sciatica.
Try this massage oil recipe for a relaxing rejuvenation. (This recipe also makes for a great body oil for a man due to the earthy aroma and soothing qualities.)
Body Rub Oil
- 1 ounce jojoba oil
- 1 ½ ounces sweet almond oil
- ½ ounce poppy seed oil
- 10 drops sandalwood essential oil
- 20 drops lime essential oil
- 10 drops vetiver essential oil
Combine the essential oils in a small glass bottle and allow to sit and mellow together over the process of about 2 or 3 days. (It's well worth the wait!) Periodically shake gently to assure they mix together properly.
Add the sweet almond oil, jojoba oil, and poppy seed oil in a separate bottle (that you plan to use for storage and dispensing) and shake to blend then add the combined essential oils. Shake gently to mix all the oils together.
This oil can actually be used as a massage oil or be self applied after a bath or shower (while the body is still damp) for a pleasant smelling and calming skin treatment. It will store for about 6 months, and you can help the body rub oil from spoiling too quickly by refrigerating when not being used. Discard when the aroma turns sour.

Hair Pomade
- 6 ounces poppy seed oil
- 2 ounces babassu oil
- 1 ounce beeswax
- 1 ounce unrefined shea butter
- 1/8 ounce ylang-ylang essential oil
- 3 drops clove essential oil
- 1 drop geranium essential oil
- 1 drop sandalwood (or cedar) essential oil
- 1 drop neroli essential oil
Combine poppy seed oil, babassu oil, beeswax and shea butter in a heat proof container, then place the container in to a pan of boiling water. Heat until wax is melted, stirring occasionally, then remove from heat.
Add the essential oils and continue stirring until all ingredients are well blended. Pour into a jar and allow to cool completely for capping.
This hair conditioning mixture will store for up to three months. To use, apply when hair is still wet after shampooing by massaging into your scalp and hair ends.

Poppy Face Polish
- 1 cup oat flour
- 1/8 cup poppy seed oil
- 2 green tea bags
- 10 drops vitamin E
- 15 drops lime essential oil
- 5 drops cypress essential oil
- 5 drops lavender essential oil
- 5 drops juniper berry essential oil
Using a metal whisk, stir together the oat flour and the poppy seed oil. Break open the green tea bags and add the contents to the flour mixture, and stir together. Add in the vitamin E, continuing to mix ingredients together and slowly adding the essential oils one drop at a time.
Transfer mixture to an airtight container and allow it to sit for about 3 to 5 days. When using, mix with enough water to make a paste and massage into face and neck then rinse.
